West and Central Africa Regional Train-the-trainer Workshop on Security Project (10 -21 June 2019

The WCO has conducted a two-week regional training on Security Project for West and Central Africa (SPWCA) from 10 to 21 June 2019, with cooperation of Benin Customs and Security Project Fund-Japan. It was the first regional training delivered by WCO in West and Central Africa. Sixteen officials (senior executives and front line officers with high potential) from nine WCA Customs Administrations and two officers from RILO West Africa and Central Africa attended the workshop.

Border Threat Detection – The Path to Artificial Intelligence

TAs global trade has become more interconnected, the movement of people and goods between countries has greatly increased and detecting threats to national security at the border has become more complex. As a result, every border security agency’s modernization agenda addresses the use of technological innovation to improve their ability to protect society. The drive to modernize is partly driven by the rapidly evolving nature of the threat landscape—use of new technology is critical to ensure agencies are ahead of, or at least keeping up with, their adversaries’ adaptability. It can also reflect political and budgetary pressures—the perennial push for agencies to do more with less.

Monograph «Customs in the Far Eastern Republic» is published

The monograph is devoted to the history of the emergence and the main activities of the customs institutions of the Far Eastern Republic (FER), which existed in the territory of the Far East of Russia in 1920–1922. The main attention is paid to the formation of the customs institutions of the buffer state, their relations with the law enforcement agencies of the FER in protecting the borders from smuggling.

Опубликована монография «Таможенное дело в Дальневосточной республике»

Монография посвящена истории возникновения и основным направлениям деятельности таможенных учреждений Дальневосточной республики (ДВР), существовавшей на территории Дальнего Востока России в 1920–1922 гг. Основное внимание уделено становлению таможенных учреждений буферного государства, их взаимоотношениям с правоохранительными ведомствами ДВР в деле защиты границ от контрабанды.

WCO Jointly Organises a Session on Gender on the Occasion of the 2019 Global Review of Aid for Trade

On the 3rd of July 2019, on occasion of the WTO Global Review of Aid for Trade, the WCO organized jointly, together with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), the World Bank Group (WBG) and the European Commission, a parallel session on Gender Integration in Aid for Trade Facilitation entitled “Existing tools and lessons learned.” The parallel session was opened by the Minister for Foreign Trade of Sweden, Ms. Ann Linde, who emphasized the importance of integrating gender in Aid for Trade initiatives and called upon international donors to allocate more funding for trade initiatives supporting gender equality. The Minister also highlighted the opportunities generated by the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation (TFA) to simplify trade flows which is particularly important for SMEs, many of which are women-owned.
